The BCBA designation is a National Board Certification in Behavior Analysis that stands for "Board Certified Behavior Analyst". The BCBA website describes a Board Certified Behavior Analyst as a qualified person who:
Conducts descriptive and systematic behavioral assessments, including functional analyses, and provides behavior analytic interpretations of the results.
Designs and supervises behavior analytic interventions
Effectively develops and implements appropriate assessment and intervention methods for use in unfamiliar situations and for a range of cases.
Teaches and trains others to carry out ethical and effective behavior analytic interventions based on published research.
Designs and delivers instruction in behavior analysis.
To qualify to sit for the BCBA examination (there is an associate level certification as well) an individual must have a Masters or Doctorate degree in a human service field like Behavior Analysis, Psychology, or Special Education.
In addition, two other requirement must be met:
The individual must complete 225 hours of graduate level instruction in Ethical considerations, Definition & characteristics and Principles, processes & concepts, Behavioral assessment and Selecting intervention outcomes & strategies, Experimental evaluation of interventions, Measurement of behavior and Displaying & interpreting behavioral data, Behavioral change procedures and Systems support
Applicants must complete 1500 hours of supervised independent fieldwork in behavior analysis.
